A Million Good Things

We are grateful for rain,
for soiled cement sidewalks
and saturated wood grain.
Give me percussion
on shingles and green leaves,
water spots on windowpanes.
Give us this day, holy and clean,
ripe for our imaginations
to stretch and unfurl in this city
that is a wet cat, its thick coat
matted slick against paper-thin
skin, bare bones. This city
that is made both new and old,
or if not new, then different
and old under an endless white sky
that is a snow globe, a bubble
brimming with a million good things,
waiting to be shaken, to be seen.
